I'm not a big car guy. It's just a way to get from point A to point B. But I do get a new car every ten years, whether I need it or not. Since I retired I have been traveling more, going on hiking trips and to game conventions. So my Escape was almost at 110K miles. I decided that even though it was only seven years old, it was time to get a new car. Besides, if I was going to get a new car I wanted to get it before a full scale trade war broke out.
My last three cars have been Ford Escapes and I really liked them. But each year the Escape seems to get smaller. I decided to look around. The Subaru Forester caught my eye. Of all compact SUV's it had the highest ground clearance. That's a good thing for getting to trailheads on rough roads. It is also the last make in its class to offer a manual transmission. This will be the last year too. It won't be offered in 2019.
So I looked hard at the Subaru Forester. There are two dealerships in the valley. Between the two of them they had 68 Foresters in stock. Only two of them had manual transmissions but I was able to get a good price on one of them. Combined with a good trade in for my old Escape I couldn't pass it up.
I'm excited about my new car. I like having a manual transmission again. I think an automatic is just boring. I'm hoping this new car will get me to a lot of trailheads.
