On our daily walks in the park, Abby sometimes brings things back to our house. If she is lucky and finds a ball, that is a real treasure. She will pick it up and carry it all the way home and take it right to her dog bed. If she finds a stick, sometimes she will try to take that home. If it is a large stick that is too awkward to carry, she'll drop it after a few steps. If it's too small, she'll bite through it and drop the pieces. If it is just right, she will take it all the way home. Then she is a dog on a mission. No stopping to sniff - she just goes full speed. She has carried things as far as half a mile. When she gets it home, I usually trade her a couple of dog treats to get her treasure from her.
Today she found something unusual. As we were walking through the park she started pulling to go off the path. I looked in the direction she wanted to go and could see something about a hundred feet away. Weird I thought. It looks like a crown. When we got to it, sure enough, it was one of those cardboard crowns that come in a Burger King kiddie meal. She grabbed it and wanted to head back immediately. So much for the rest of our walk. We made a beeline for home, Abby pulling me all the way even though I was walking as fast as I could.
When we got home, she took her crown straight to her dog bed. She really liked her crown and was reluctant to trade for it. I had to give her a half a pack of beef jerky before she was willing to give up her prize. I guess she liked the idea of being royalty.
